Some Internet History

  1. Originally websites just displayed text using the ASCII system (American Standard Code for Information Interchange).  The most up-to-date version is referred to as UTF-8.  Basically each letter has a telegraph style code based on binary (zeros & ones).
  2. Later on static graphics appeared followed by today’s emphasis on multimedia and interactive websites.
  3. The ancestor of today’s internet appeared in the 1960s.  It was a joint project of the United States Department of Defence and a few American universities.  It was known as the ARPANET.
